It is almost imposible to survive by ikarus so long time without main repair.
I say it is possible. Ikarus are known as robust vehicles, which allow some compromises in maintenance intervals. The planned resource of Ikarus 280 bus is 800 000 km. In Sofia, however, some buses had more than 1 million km on the odometer before their first overhaul. Some were even scrapped without undergoing a single overhaul. Keep in mind that maintance of buses in Sofia is very basic and irregular. "Overhauls" in Bulgaria are also more like new paint and floor linoleum rather than a real overhaul. Also, trolleybuses have longer exploatation period than buses, so 24 years without overhaul sounds possible.
I think that weather is more dry than here. Our ikaruses were running over salt during winter and 8 months of year are cold and rainy. Even diference between Poland and Hungary is visible.
Could be the weather, but Bulgaria slo has harsh winters with a lot of snow and salt. Summer, on the other hand, is hot and dry.
Besides, trolleybuses brake and accelerate more smoothly than diesel buses, which also contributes to their longer lifecycle as MPelov already noticed. Also, its total mileage might be lower than it would be in a larger city, especially if it operates only during the peak hours.
