Dennis Lancet III / Reading #ASV 900

4 maja 1987 - Station Way, Crawley, UK: The road between London and Brighton (about 50miles/70km) is popular for various vehicle rallies, including the one for old commercial vehicles, run each May. At Crawley, around half distance, is a rest stop and many vehicles turn in here for refreshments. This rare Dennis Lancet was owned from new by the same family coaching concern, but more recently was bought by preservationists.

Leyland LB5 / Dodson #XU 7498

4 maja 1989 - Brighton Road, Crawley, UK: The annual London to Brighton rally for commercial vehicles always produces a few buses often not seen before, like this 1924 Leyland of the Chocolate Express company, one of over 200 "pirate" bus operators that ran alongside the main London General company in the 1920s. These companies were closed down by new laws in 1934 and this bus disappeared, only to be found derelict on a farm in Norfolk in 1984, rescued and fully restored. It always amuses me to see an historic vehicle broken down - a large crowd of people instantly forms and just gets in the way, none of whom have the faintest idea what the problem is, but all with an opinion.

Commer Shooting Brake #EC 634

7 maja 1989 - Station Way, Crawley, UK: Something for the weekend? Just the thing to keep at home for bus spotting trips, perhaps, is this Commer estate bus dating from 1909 (so almost 110 years ago, or nearly as old as me). It was originally the property of the 5th Lord Lonsdale and used at his extensive estate in Cumbria, then found use as a hotel bus in Buckinghamshire. It was found in a country barn in 1955 and extensively restored, as can be seen here. Apart from the solid tyres (which make the ride a bit bumpy) it`s a lovely thing. Note the chain drive.....

AEC Regent Tower Wagon #CWJ 410

26 sierpnia 1997 - A vehicle that has eluded TWB until now is this ex-Sheffield Corporation AEC Regent of 1937 which was converted into a tower wagon at some point in the 1950s or 1960s. Conversion of old buses to various types of service vehicle was frequently undertaken by bus and tram operators - this one was a highbridge bus with Weymann body until converted. Now it performs useful duties maintaining the overhead wires at the National Tramway Museum in Derbyshire.

SNCV Andenne Autorail-Tracteur #ART 300

6 września 1997 - Rue de Moustier, Thuin: The ASVi transport museum in Thuin, near Charleroi, has an excellent collection of trams and other items once owned by the Belgian secondary railways (SNVC/NMBS). They are very unusual in having permission to run their operations in public roads, where the original SNCV tracks were often laid. Here is a "whoops" moment on the way down from the ASVi depot to the centre of Thuin village - ASVi drivers have to be extremely careful in several places, not to collide with non-too-careful drivers. ART 300 was one of the last vehicles built for the SNCV - the "T" suffix designates a tractor, rather than just a motor car, being more powerful and with added ballast weight to help traction. It was the mainstay of ASVI operations for the first few years of the museum`s existence.
