29 września 2006 - Liberec (CZ) – Saldovo namesti. As most tramway fans will know, this is a fascinating city. Liberec city tramways began to convert from metre to standard gauge, in accordance with a central Czechoslovak policy, but the work remained unfinished in 1992 when the new Czech Republic came into existence. The long interurban line to Jablonec is still metre gauge, although there have been various plans to convert it and divert the route onto the tracks of a parallel railway line. Liberec therefore still has two fleets of trams and much dual gauge trackwork in the city, some of which is needed for the metre gauge tram to reach the depot. I love the little red ‘1435’ badge on the front, just to remind the driver of this tram what gauge it is (the metre-gauge Tatras have a blue ‘1000’ sticker).

I don't know. When I went there in 2006 it seemed that the metre gauge would be gone quite soon, but today nothing much has changed!

Conversion in Bratislava was never started, of course - although they laid some dual gauge rails at road crossings and other places whilst doing other track repairs, the standard gauge rail was never used and is still there.

In Bratislava they only widened the distance between the tracks to allow wider, Czechoslovak standard vehicles. In Liberecky Kraj (region), there have been long-standing plans for a regional tramway between Zittau (D) and Harrachov (and even Szklarska Poreba in PL) using a variety of new, disused and existing railway and Liberec tram alignments. Regiotram Nisa is a dead project. The only thing which is now almost sure is double-track line to Lékárna, continuing probably in single line to Vratislavice and further to Jablonec. But we'll definitely see after the completion of new track Fügnerova-U Lomu-Rochlice. 1st part of construction begins in June 2009 (Fügnerova-Mlýnská).
